Kia ora I am a mama to two children both have been at kohangas from three months old in Wellington upper up being at kohanga was the best decision my partner and I made the aroha in them and the support was amazing I can't thank them enough my kids then left and now go to kuras up in whangarei were we live now. -

My name is Kandace Smiler and I was enrolled in 1983, the second Kohanga Reo at Waiwhetu Marae, in Wellington costing $25/ week which was a lot for my parents back then plus morning tea roster. -

A product of Te Kohanga Reo o Puketapu ki Rāhui Pokeka, I remember the best times playing in the sandpit and on the swings, but also singing waiata. -

Nā te kōhanga ahau i tangata ai, from the enrolment of my 3 children (the eldest is 16 now) i have been involved with and now have the privilege of serving in the unique initiative that is Kōhanga reo, i have held a plethora of positions in the kaupapa from a whānau member through to Kaiako Matua, these positions have aided in my successful transition into other roles on boards (land trusts, School Boards, Te Whakakitenga) and also teaching opportunities (Te Reo Māori initiatives, Waiata classes, Rangatahi project’s etc). -
