Te Wiki te Reo Māori 2023 pledge

We will record our tamariki in the playground and in the classroom saying phrases they have learnt in Te Reo Māori. Kupu that they would normally use in English. Also aim to video our whole school say and do the actions to our Arahoe School Pepeha.

Ko Michelle Sadgrove ahau, te kaiako puoro o Arahoe Kura. Nō New Lynn , Tamaki Makarau ahau. This is what I presented for Tuesday morning 14th September in our school broadcast 'tangi te pere' which happens every morning at 9. 00am (on line on seesaw). I could not download it as a video however it is a youtube clip under Arahoe Broadcast. We had Dame Hinewehi Mohi (married to my cousin) and Stan Walker (who records his music with my son) doing a guest appearance on our broadcast as well as an interview with my son who is a music producer and sound engineer and songwriter who has produced for a number of Maori Music artists and who also worked on Pukana. I am very proud of our tamariki and kaiako at our kura who got actively involved in Te wiki o te Reo Maori. It was a great celebration of my culture, our culture!

A couple of Kahoot quizzes to enhance our Te Reo Maori kupu knowledge.

22 kaiako and 2 tamariki came together for a shared pikiniki. We started with a karakia and each took turns to share the food we bought along to our virtual pikiniki. We had a guessing game and were well supported by our expert kaiako who taught us some knew phrases and vocabulary. But most of all - we had fun!

Today we had 22 kaiako and 2 tamariki come together for a virtual pikiniki. We all took turns to share in te reo what we were having for lunch, learnt some knew phrases and vocabulary from our expert kaiako, played a guessing game and most of all had a lot of fun.

I am part Maori (Te Rarawa decent) and have been learning Te Reo over the past 2 years so I can be more confident in using it in my classes with my tamariki and also for my own personal growth as Maori. Our school is on a journey of embedding Tikanga Maori and Te Reo Maori in our school practices and being involved this week in celebrating our language is becoming a natural and very important thing to do as a school. This week is an opportunity to remind ourselves how importan and unique the Maori Language is and it's an opportunity to revisit the principals of the Treaty of Waitangi and to discuss with my tamariki why they learn the Maori language in our schools and in schools throughout Aotearoa.

I want to embed Te Reo into my every day life. I want to feel confident and competent with the language.

I would love to become confident in Te Reo. School resources would be awesome and hearing how others share their reo in their work places would be awesome.
