"An upsurging interest in Maori culture and crafts is taking place throughout the country. While this may be more noticeable outside this district (this area always being a Maoridom stronghold), the encouragement of Maoritanga goes on enthusiastically in the Gisborne district. One of the clubs fostering this interest is the Te Rangipaia Maori Club, where anyone at all interested can join and participate. This is particularly good from the pakeha point of view, as much can be learnt from the Maori way and outlook on life."
This piece appeared in Gisborne Photo News on September 6, 1972. The people depicted are doing kapa haka, carving, weaving, and te reo Māori classes!
