My first time experience celebrating Matariki, especially Puanga here in Taranaki. This photo resonates with me, after spending the weekend at our Wananga- Puanga.
When the old people saw the stars set, they would make a small hàngi. They would weep and tell Matariki the names of those who had gone since the stars set. When the hàngi was uncovered. The scent of the food would rise and strengthen the stars, for they were weak & cold. Referring to all the stars.
