Louisa | Maori Language Moment 2021

Our preparation began a fortnight before. Our Cultural Affairs Coordinator hosted two reo Māori workshops leading up to to Māori Language Week, to teach staff about the history and language of the Māori people. Staff who are all beginning their Māori learning journey were encouraged to create and learn their mihimihi. The third and final workshop was held during Māori Language Week and on Tuesday at noon, staff shared their mihimihi with colleagues live via Zoom.

Our external contribution to the Māori Language Moment was a combined video of some staff doing their mihimihi in clips that they self-filmed while in lockdown. The combined short video was posted on our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and You Tube sites.

We also challenged other diplomatic missions to participate in the Māori Language Moment on social media, helping to inspire our hoa at the Australian, Canadian and British High Commissions as well as the Embassies of the Netherlands, Ireland and France.
