Some people worried about the future of Maori in Hicks Bay, for they believed it should remain the language for everyday use and should not be kept just for elders to use for ceremonies on the marae. Less than a quarter of the people, in the survey knew no Maori at all - most of these were young school children. This meant that most of the people in the community knew the language, although only adults over 25 spoke it fluently.
Te Tai Rāwhiti | Gisborne | Matakaoa-Waiapu | 1970-79 | 5% of Māori children can speak te reo. (1970-75) | Story is by tangata whenua
