Some people said that the schools had a specific responsibility to help revive the Maori language as it was because of the punishment previous generations of children received that people stopped using it, and several people said that they had decided not to teach their own children Maori because they themselves had been punished at school. Others regretted that they had not been able to hold onto their language at school and were glad that their children would perhaps have an opportunity to learn Maori as they were unable to teach them themselves.
