In the other communities there were three people who reported being strapped or hit with supplejack. Some said their teacher had a negative attitude although they have not directly experienced punishment. One Mangakahia resident said that he "found life very hard when young" and "could not understand the difference between Maori and Pakeha until he was older," having spoken only Maori until he was ten; he did not think he was alone in having such difficulty.
