Photo of The Māori Language in Napier and Bay View

English seems to have displaced Maori as the language used between parents and children in many central and southern Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa communities a generation or more earlier than in many northern North Island regions. Taken as a whole, Napier and Bay View were among the most English-dominated areas in the North Island. Even within the Maori community, Napier was very much an English-speaking city at the time of the survey. This partly reflected the linguistic history of Hawkes Bay as a whole.
