“Our kaupapa is to promote Māori writing and writers,” says Eboni Waitere, co-executive director alongside Brian Morris. “Māori language is important to us, and so is the whole Māori ecosystem being lifted, tino rangatiratanga, our ideas of success.”

“Māori have always been great storytellers. I have a lot of uncles who have apparently ‘wrestled gigantic wheke’ and kuia who were the best ghostbusters the world has ever seen. There are so many layers to our thinking, with our intertwined relationships and the worlds we create. I think in the past, access to be able to share those stories was denied. Huia has helped change that.”
