On my daily walk there is a plinth situated back from the road . It recalls the history of occupation in this area in English on one side and in Māori the other side. It was almost completely overgrown., so I’ve spent several happy, productive hours down there clearing the weeds and sharing this matauranga with people I meet.
Through this I have learned I live in the Ngati Paoa rohe. I am learning the identity of some of the landmarks around me, and I feel free to practice my pronunciation te reo Māori by reading aloud the words written on the plinth.
