I was at an elders lunch put on by the Salvation Army. Mixed cultures of about 80 people. At noon, the Pastor asked if anyone knew what was special about this week. Silence. I put up my hand, ' Ko tenei te Wiki o Te Reo Maori' and was asked to explain macrons and what a waiata was and invited to sing. I sang 'Ka pīoioi ' and explained how Matua Kereopa Ratapu wrote it about his joyful home-coming.

In 1985 after being privileged to be part of te ao Maori in 1973, I became a citizen of Aotearoa and took my Official Oath in te reo Maori. Partly to honour the beautiful kaumatua who had mentored me and because I was and still am passionate to be part of the revival and saving of te reo rangatira. Language is who you are; it is a living link between you and your tupuna and if you can encourage your tamariki it will be your link to their future too. Kia Kaha te reo! This year I will be with the kaumatua kuia o Waipareira and we will be doing a whole range of things for 2023 Maori Moment. Karakia, Korero, Waiata, Whakatauki. And, of course we will share kai. :-)

I have been trying to learn te reo rangatira because: 1. it's a truly beautiful language. 2. it is passed down from the ancestors, even though it's changed over the years. 3. It is the language of this land, as important as nga rakau me nga manu, nga maunga me nga moana. 4. If we lose the language we lose our souls. 5. It is an important reflection of who we are, who we were and who we will proudly become. 6. Our tamariki and rangtahi have a right to hold and speak their anguage, so we must be kaitiaki and make sure to save it like any other taonga, 7. It's one of the official languages of Aoteaora and the more people who learn it, the more importance it will have in the wider world. 8. But mainly because it calls to me and claims me and I want it to be part of my life.

Kia ora, he mihi nui ki Matariki 2021 :-) Our Ropu, Te Wahine Connection o Waipareira, now use the Matariki kaikōhau as our opening karakia. This pic was taken just before we went to share kai to celebrate Matariki. Our kuia had been to a Dawn Blessing for Matariki and will be celebrating again with Te Ropu Kaumatua o Waipareira, at Te Mahurehure Marae at the end of July. You can see the prints of paintings by Maori artist Nicole Johnson on te tepu, she gifted each of us a copy. Pai te ra, pai te tau, pai ngā wahine toa. Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa

Te Pou Maori Theatre have been doing Front Yard Festival for Kaumatua - Kuia in lockdown. They come and sing, do sketches and generally make the day brighter for people who are isolated. That's me in my mask, peeping through the heart. ou can probably see the poster in my window to tautoko Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori.
