"He aha te reo ki ahau? He kāinga."
What does te reo mean to me? It is home.
Te reo Māori is more than just words. It’s a feeling that rises in my chest – a deep breath in, like returning to a place where I belong. It’s the sound of my tīpuna whispering through the trees, the rhythm of the land under my feet, the warmth of stories handed down, not just told, but lived.
To me, te reo is a feeling of coming home. Not just to a place, but to identity, to connection, to truth. It has helped stitch together what was once fractured – in me, in my whānau, and in our country.
In this time capsule, I leave this thought for you, 50 years from now:
May te reo Māori be not only surviving, but thriving. May it live on the tongues of tamariki, in the laughter of kuia and koroua, in the everyday rhythm of Aotearoa. May it never again be something we have to fight for, but something we simply are.
Ko te reo te mauri o te mana Māori – cherish it. Nurture it. Live in it.
