As Tangata Tiriti, how are we supporting this milestone Māori Language Week?
We are celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, Māori Language Week, as non-indigenous New Zealanders - and this year marks an extraordinary milestone: the 50th anniversary!
We are embracing Te Reo Māori, not afraid to make mistakes and learn.
I reached out to these amazing wāhine to join me in this video, and it was an instant yes from all.
Each one of us is originally from a different country or descent. Our accents are different. We don't look the same.
But Aotearoa is now our common home. We acknowledge the Tangata Whenua and the native language of the land. A language that has endured and evolved over the years.
And we rejoice in the diversity and uniqueness of each of us, the Tangata Tiriti, united in supporting this taonga.
Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2025. Half a century strong! The theme "Ake ake ake – A Forever Language" perfectly captures this milestone. Resilience, adaptability and endurance.
