Daniela Ferreira Araujo Silva
Kia ora e hoa mā! I am Brazilian and have indigenous ancestry both on my mother's and my father's whakapapa. But my ancestors were forced out of their lands and into assimilation, taught to be ashamed of anything related to their origins and culture, so that even the memory of the language, ethnicity and place of origin of my ancestors has been erased. When I first went to Aotearoa during my PhD, and learned the meaning of manaakitanga by living with a Māori host whānau, I started to become aware of this historical trauma and to heal. Learning te reo is one of the ways to honor all of the gifts that I received from Aotearoa and my host whānau.
