Ko te reo kia rere!

Allow the language to soar!

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori will be 13-19 September:

Māori Language Week has been celebrated each year from 1975. September 14 and commemorates the presentation of the 1972 Māori language petition to parliament.

Launch:

This year Jasmax is leveraging Te Wiki o te Reo Māori to launch a series of initiatives that help us dive deeper into our understanding of our unique Aotearoa history, language, bi-culturalism and Maori thought & design. During this year’s Te Wiki o te Reo Māori we will also explore relevant and challenging topics for Māori within the industry, while also leaning into some back to basic that will benefit us all.

Te Moko Kanohi:

Our first wananga delves into the resurgence and normalisation of Moko-Kanohi (traditional facial tattoo) in today’s society, and the celebration of that. We aim to tackle some of the misconceptions, undertones and negative connotations around the wearing of Mataora and Kauae (either subtle or obvert) and its impact on the normalisation of this Kaupapa. This session will be hosted by our very own Elisapeta Heta with special guest Matekitatahi Riwiri-McDonald (Architectural Graduate) and Graham Tipene (Kaiārahi, Creative, Artist).

Doing Culture:

Our second wānanga Will be hosted by our partners at Haumi featuring, Ani McGahan (GM) & Karl Johnston (Pou Urungi). This conversation aims to tackle some of the hard questions that often don’t get asked around what it means to be a bi-cultural practice. This is about how we as a collective lean into unpacking assumptions about our approach to working within this space, and constantly reengage in and around it.

Pepeha & Pronunciation:

Introductions and pronunciation are those topics/ occasions that often make us a little uneased. We want this to be a comfortable, interactive session to make this a little easier for you and allow you to engage and connect with the kōrero. The main purpose being us feeling comfortable with giving it a go and being ok getting it wrong sometimes, but also feeling confident about seeking clarity as we all develop on our Te Reo Māori journeys together. This kōrero will touch on things such as levels of introduction, the importance of names and correct pronunciation and will be hosted by our very own Kahu Eruera & Kelsey Metcalfe.
