This week last year I carried out a 45 minute research interview with me asking in English and my research participant providing all their korero in te reo Maori - I realised I understood a lot of what was said. I decided to use te reo greetings as a standard in my daily interactions.
This week as I work alone and went out to catch up with a friend for coffee to mark the moment. I had a short an impromptu te reo Maori conversation with my barrista - after opening up the conversation with Kia ora. It was a challenge as I hadn't planned it. But I surprised myself when I recognised what was being said and I was able to answer with a sensible answer after she asked how I was today. #firstgenrationNZer #startingtereojourney #dailytereo
