I have always loved listening to & watching musicians. From back in 1983 I had the privilege of spending time throughout the year at Hoani Waititi marae with Te Roopū Manutaki as they created a new kapa haka piece for competition. Pita Sharples in particular was amazing to witness. I feel like I am almost from another planet to that which births musicians, but I was determined to at least teach myself a couple of waiata & to be able to play them on the guitar & sing along on my own. Te reo & te ao marama sparked for me during that time. Still not a speaker but absolutely know where I call home, in part because of the language that also comes from that place ... here!
