I’m English and moved to Aotearoa over ten years ago. I started Te Reo Māori at EIT and learnt karakia, my mihi, whakapapa with my class of 12! I chose to do this as I felt disconnected from my community and wanted to understand Māori on a deeper level. I knew very little kupu that I did not feel confident to use. I encouraged my best friends one who is Māori and one from Canada to join me on this course. Our teacher is incredibly kind, patient and compassionate which has made this journey feel all the more accessible. It’s been challenging but I feel so much more connected to Aotearoa already. I have a deeper reverence for the land, the Māori communities. The language is beautiful and full of aroha and mana.
