The Maori language is important for New Zealand because it is the language of tangata whenua.
I am of Samoan descent, and married to a descendant from Ngati Koroki Kahukura. We have 2 children, and I walked with them on their journey at Kohanga Reo, Kura Kaupapa Maori and Turakina Maori Girls College.
Aotearoa's history is based on the tangata whenua, and we as New Zealanders should keep the language alive for our children and generations to come.
