I'm reflecting and remembering the past. The not so long ago past where tāngata whenua was punished when they kōrero in their language. When te reo was banned in kura and schools. And when the ban was lifted, because of the years of not speaking, teaching and learning in te reo Māori, tamariki was still not being taught in Te Reo Māori. Te reo Māori should not be confined to one week of the year. We should be normalising the kōrero. I wonder how many shops, TV news, radio etc will continue the kōrero next week?
This week I went out of my comfort zone by videoing myself doing kupu o te rā and sharing my learning journey with my mahi (ECE) and joining my universities MLM through zoom and kahoot. This made me realise how many people want to learn and want to kōrero, they just never got the opportunity. My Māori Language Moment won't be just one short moment. But the rest of my life will be my Māori Language Moment.
