For our youth activity tonight, our taitamariki learnt about the different 'Matariki' stories around the world based on Dr. Rangi and Miriama Kamo's book, 'A Cluster of Stars, A Cluster of Stories: Matariki Around the World'. Each rōpū chose a country to learn about and then had to report back what they learnt to the rest of the group. Some danced but the majority did re-enactments that had everyone in fits of laughter! We then ended the night with a kaitahi. Mānawatia a Matariki from the youth of Rototuna Ward in Kirikiriroa and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints 💫💛

We celebrated for a week, starting with poi making workshop on Monday. On Tuesday we remembered those who had passed by planting trees along the Opāoa river. Celebrating the present was again the focus on Wednesday with harakeke whetu making workshop followed by a shared campus lunch. Back to the future on Thursday with a walk to the Opāoa Bridge, the relatively new northern entrance to Waiharakeke. The Opāoa Bridge features a stunning seven-metre pou whenua carved by Reg Thompsett as well as interpretation panels that share the history of the mana whenua of Te Wairau. And finally, a few hardy souls joined Te Rūnanga a Rangitāne o Wairau to observe Matariki as it rose above The Wairau Bar early Saturday morning.

This year I am away from Aotearoa for Matariki, I am helping out at a summer camp in the United States. I have missed hearing te reo everyday but what has brought me peace and happiness has been being able to teach the campers te reo Māori, share stories of tikanga and my passion for Matariki and the special activities which happen during this time, the meanings of the stars and the special connection we have to them. I've loved being able to hear campers use te reo and be interested in learning more. I love sharing this language and culture with people from all over the world!

Kia ora! This was my first time celebrating Matariki. One of the things I did, as shown in the video, was practicing my very basic Te Reo skills by saying the beautiful kaikōhau. I also said it in my native language, as I am from Brazil and I have Portuguese heritage. Lastly, I said it in Spanish, since I also have Spanish ancestry. Even though I have Amerindian and African heritage, I do not know the specific languages those ancestors spoke due to genocide, slavery, and colonialism. Still, I am extremely proud of my indigenous roots and I acknowledge the immense amount of privileges I have in my life. #KaikōhauChallenge

We spent the night on Thursday the 13th and day Friday the 14th on the Hauraki with our mokos. We acknowledged our loved ones, sent a lantern up in the sky, we had games we watched the dawn ceremony at 6am live streaming, we caught fish, we laughed enjoyed each other's company, learnt about water safety, and had a hakari kai. To celebrate our Matariki moment our whanau were actually camping amongst about 300 campers, so we decided to do a Maori theme, taste testing evening of some of our favorite kai from Aotearoa. We made Maori bread and trifle, my husband carved and painted signs to make our campsite look like a marea, we also had our Whanau and friends come and sing and dance while the campers from all over came to taste our kai. My friend and I performed a hautapu. Her partner, and my dear friend, passed away just two weeks ago. We took turns with the karakia, and watched the glorious sunrise. It was really special.

We baked colorful muffins and brought them to our favourite ECE centre in the heart of Tāmaki Makaurau. Our daughter enjoyed meeting and playing with her former mates there. They were singing karakia, learning new te reo Māori words, listening to the stories about Matariki stars and riding a special Taniwha train.

During the school holidays we attended several events at local galleries, libraries and community centers across Tāmaki Makaurau – dedicated to Matariki celebration. My daughter learnt how to make a pair of poi and how to create her own star decoration. We also read a few new books about Matariki and Māori New Year.

I walked across to Ōrewa Surf Club with my neighbour to participate in the Matariki celebration hosted by Te Herenga Waka o Ōrewa Marae. Nathan Kareama explained where to look for Matariki, then we joined together with karakia and waiata, with remembrance of loved ones who had passed away in the previous year. This celebration was every bit as much about joining our community as one, as well as marking Matariki. <3

I have set the challenge to my class to learn the kaikōhau so we can begin Term 3 positively through our expressions of hope. They will make a FLIP video like this and post it to our class page. We had a community lunch to celebrate Matariki at our centre. We had a display of kaikōhau in many different languages, and said the kaikōhau in te reo Māori before our kai. People brought kai to share, helped with set up and dishes and got to know each other a bit more. It was a great opportunity to build whakawhanaungatanga in our community.

My friend and I also work for a Social Services sector and will be celebrating Matariki in our site hui on Wednesdsay, we will be be celebrating Pōhutukawa but bringing something that reminds us of a loved one passed on and share stories about them.

We all as a whānau wrote down something/s we’re proud of ourselves this last year for & a goal for the coming year & shared one by one. Burnt them in a little box since it was raining & sent the ashes up to Hiwa-i-terangi. Because it was raining we had to use balloons instead of lanterns but wrote the names of our whānau & friends that we’ve lost & are thinking of & sent those up to Pohutukawa.
