Tōku reo, tōku ohooho, tōku reo, tōku māpihi maurea! Every year, for the past three years our kura has worked on something special for our Wā Tuku Reo Māori. This year our rangatahi formed their own komiti to plan and run activities for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and this year’s Māori Language Moment. This year we think our Moment is the best one yet, so mātakitaki mai! !

Wainuiomata started the very first kōhanga reo as well as the first bilingual unit at an Intermediate School. Our community has a very long and proud history of promoting Te Reo Māori. As a school we will continue to do our part and carry on that legacy, each and every day! ! ! This year we wanted to include the mahi we have been doing in Hauora, Te whare tapa whā, Mindfulness and Wellbeing, with our celebrations for this week. We hope you enjoy our Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori. . . MAURIORA! ! !

One of our kaiako taught the cup song to our rangatahi to the waiata Tutira mai. We practised it all week to be ready for Monday. We decided that after our cup song we would sing our school song as well. We held a special school assembly in which our bilingual class, Te Kāhui Tamariki, delivered the assembly entirely in Te Reo Māori as well as using sign language to acknowledge Te wiki o te reo Rotarota for the following week. That was our Māori Language Moment for 2020 and we are so glad to be a part of this historical event. Nga mihi to you everyone who made it all possible! ! !

Our rangatahi have been going to the Hikoi in Wellington to launch Te Wiki o te Reo Maori for the last few years now and now that it has been cancelled, due to COVID, we feel that we should support this 'moment as well. We are proud to be from Wainuiomata and are proud of our culture and our languages.
