Everyone at Titirangi Primary in Tamaki Makaurau gathered together to sing waiata. Here we are waiting for the countdown to 12 pm!

We are in Level 4 lockdown so we have a video for all our whānau to play at 12pm in their own homes. In the video, whānau can join in with a karakia that we say frequently at school and then they can sing along with 'Pēpeha" by Six60.

The tamariki in my Year 2 class created these paintings of the Matariki Stars. We shared our artworks and talked about what each star is connected with at a school assembly. We also hung them in the window for our special Matariki breakfast with the whole school community.

I am a Primary School Teacher in Aotearoa so I have a responsibility to use Te Reo Māori in my classroom, and around our kura, as much as possible because it is the indigenous language of Aotearoa. I need to try and make up for the teachers from the past who caused so many tamariki and whānau to lose their language. Also, I am Pākehā but my hoa tane and 3 step-children are all fluent Te Reo speakers so I want to be able to speak Māori with them.

At Titirangi Primary, we wanted to have a whole school assembly for the Māori Language moment and sing some of our favourite waiata. We are in Level 2. 5 because of Covid-19 in Tāmaki Makaurau, so we had to improvise. We made a slideshow for all the classes to play at 12pm so we could all sing in our own classrooms at the same time. Here is Ruma Tekau mā toru singing "E Kereru. " (written by Jenny Shearer and Matiu te Huki. ) The rest of our playlist included "Aotearoa" "Tutira mai" "Poi E" and "Kia māu ki tō ūkaipō. "
