Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori 2021 | Your Moments

From schools, to workplaces to whānau and friends. Thousands of New Zealanders stopped to share in a moment of unity for our people and our language. In joining our Māori Language Moment, you became part of a movement that began a generation ago.

Kia kaha te reo Māori!
Kia kaha Aotearoa!

As a Year 1 & 2 class, we learnt to ask about our feelings and how to respond in te reo. We recorded this in pairs and posted it to parents.

We shared waiata we heard tamariki singing amongst themselves earlier in the day. Nga kōtiro stood at the front and tama at the back after one of our tamariki shared that this was how their siblings stood when they performed in their kapa haka group.

We participated in some playcentre workshops to learn a bit more about pronunciation and poi. We found a TV program in Te Reo māori to learn some words with our children. And I found this special proverb participating in an activity

video icon

We taught our tamariki 'a ha ka ma' and put exercises to it.

Room 7’s Ko Wai Au QR Code Pepeha Wall. Tamariki pre recorded themselves saying their pepeha and then we linked their videos to their own unique QR codes. Others can use a device to scan the code to watch & listen to tamariki do their pepeha. It’s great for those who are still building their confidence up to be able stand and speak in front of others. It’s also an awesome way for whānau to build connections / whai hononga. All we needed was an ipad to complete the space ;) hehe On top of all of this tamariki from our 2 bilingual classes went around the whole school to share and teach other classes different Māori kēmu, waiata, kupu, pūrakau. He rawe te rā!

I’ve been a head prefect of kapa haka 20 years ago from kura

I'm reflecting and remembering the past. The not so long ago past where tāngata whenua was punished when they kōrero in their language. When te reo was banned in kura and schools. And when the ban was lifted, because of the years of not speaking, teaching and learning in te reo Māori, tamariki was still not being taught in Te Reo Māori. Te reo Māori should not be confined to one week of the year. We should be normalising the kōrero. I wonder how many shops, TV news, radio etc will continue the kōrero next week? This week I went out of my comfort zone by videoing myself doing kupu o te rā and sharing my learning journey with my mahi (ECE) and joining my universities MLM through zoom and kahoot. This made me realise how many people want to learn and want to kōrero, they just never got the opportunity. My Māori Language Moment won't be just one short moment. But the rest of my life will be my Māori Language Moment.

One tama in Rata Room made a tumeke video about his pepeha. Tino pai rawe N!

MANU is the fantastic plastic Māori. Here she's letting you know who discovered Aotearoa, and why it's called Aotearoa.

I used Te Reo throughout the day in my rest home and with staff members in general conversation and with friends by phone, WhatsApp and text messages; prayed a karakia before meals; posted the Lord's prayer on my facebook page; did some revision of my favourite whakatauki and listened to some of my Maori CDs. . .

My daughter and I speaking Māori at 12pm. She is in Year 3 at kura reo Māori and I am an adult learner. We are learning together.

We share with you our, RCP, celebration of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Our people welcomed the mistakes (nau mai ngā hapa), felt the fear and did it anyway (tūwhitia te hopo, mairangatia te angitū) and shared their mihi and pepeha throughout the week. Kia kaha Te Reo Māori. Mauri Ora!

Our company haka is one way we build whanaungatanga, a way we unite our diverse team. We have 13 different languages spoken by our staff and for many of them, this was the first te reo Māori they have learned. Not everyone could make it today with lockdowns etc, though we couldn’t miss the opportunity to share one of our Māori Language Moments. Kia kaha te reo Māori! Code Avengers is proudly founded here in Aotearoa New Zealand and we’re on a mission to provide confidence in a digital world, for all tamariki.

After being in lockdown our rangatahi in Dargaville were excited to be allowed back on campus under alert level 2 and decided to cook a kai together to celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori and enjoy each others company. They organised their ingredients using both English and Te Reo Māori to help them learn the Māori name for each component of their kai. It was a great time of whanaungatanga and the kai was delicious and appreciated.

We gathered as staff and sang a waiata together. New to many of the team but we all gave it a go :)

Kia ora koutou, Watched and enjoyed KA MĀNU OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO - YouTube Working from home & missing my team - continued with a tribute table for Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori 2021 for our Friday online team meeting and for my whanau to enjoy. Nga mihi nui

Kia ora as a work place we had kupu each day of the week, we had waiata maori music playing for our maori moment, we also had games and competitions for the week.

I spent time singing Purea Nei & Mo Maria over & over again. I am learning slowly, love the sound of te reo & hope to be able to speak this beautiful language. Thank you for opportunity to take part. 💗🙆

He whakamatau tuarua tā tātou waiata pepeha!

For our kura Māori Language Moment this year, our Kapa haka tamariki (x90 Year 4-6 students) did a haka flashmob around the school. We took over the school intercom and let our kura haka fill the wairua and taringa of everyone around! It was lightly drizzling outside but most classes and kaiako (including our tumuaki) came out (600+ tamariki) and joined in for the empowerment of Te Reo Māori. As well as this, all kaiako were up skilling their tamariki in Māori waiata and kemu to continue using in their ākomanga throughout the year and beyond!

Kia ora whanau Each day I did a kupu o te ra on my facebook page and included whanau, paddling, people, Some were videos and some were photos, Here are the links to facebook where they are https://fb. watch/87pMRXovyt/ https://fb. watch/87pNH2VBpI/ Log In or Sign Up to View See posts, photos and more on Facebook. https://fb. watch/87pRe5f2bu/ https://fb. watch/87pXK-Y_eP/ Moving forward I have now added in Kupu O Te Wiki, where each week I share a word for the week. This is to support my son at kura kaupapa, daughter just started kohanga, also for me starting te reo lessons and to encourage my partner to te reo maori, which he was able to do since he was a child, Here is the Kupu O Te Wiki for this week https://fb. watch/87pYGPz-7Y/ Nga mihi Vesna Radonich

We sung a waiata Purea nei together.

I shared my moment by listening to the Te WIki o Te Reo waiata playlist on spotify while organising an online TWOTRM quiz for my workplace.

Caught up with friends via ZOOM and we did a quic karakia, some waiata and a short korero, which was uploaded to Facebook from the organiser.

Kanikani o te pō whakamutunga o te wiki o te reo Māori.

Morena! We had a very low key morning as we are all working from home. However we did get a few emails bouncing back and forth in te reo, which since none of us have more than "observer" te reo status, was quite fun. Hopefully it will encourage us to use more te reo, and the associated concepts going forward through the coming year.

Here at Āria Primary we try to use Te Reo Māori whenever we can. Our tamariki are proud of their Te Reo abilities and love to use their reo. Mauri ora!

Kia Ora! Awaiting the countdown for the Māori language moment last week where I listened to waiata for the day and sang along where I could!

CC2 tamariki kōrero Māori daily practising karakia, pepeha and waiata. We celebrated by creating Māori artwork, playing knuckle bones, string games and Kahoot answering Te reo patai. Our school is having a draw for tamariki who have been working at Te Reo in their homes with their whanau. We have loved our ako to acknowledge Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.

We had an amazing week celebrating Te Wiki o te reo Māori. Each day we had different challenges at school for tamariki, akomanga, kaiako and whānau to participate in. Our Māori language moment looked different for each class, as this year due to Covid restrictions in school we could not gather collectively. Heoi ano, classes took part in - reo rotarota waiata, tākaro, tuhituhi, karakia, kore tinana, kanikani, pukana, panui pukapuka. Here is a compilation of our week! Matakitaki mai!

Students were learning how to ask 'He aha te kupu Māori mo. . . ?' There were 48 Māori words placed around the school that they had to find in their tuakana/teina learning buddies.

I am a tutor for rangatahi of 16 to 19 year olds. I gave them a big cardboard to create a snakes and ladders game which is numbered in te reo maori with added questions of He aha te. kupu hou mo. . teacher? etc. Its a fun incentive to implement te Reo maori into the programme. Mauri ora.

Kiaora koutou. He aha te kupu hou mo Monday? Rahina Ko te Rahina o tenei ra.

At 12pm our staff joined a Zoom and recited a karakia together listened to a waiata while sharing our pepeha and then sang a hymn together. We aimed to have 15 people join and ended up with 17! This was a great experience.

We had a fantastic te wiki o te reo in Whakarewa class at Clarkville Primary. We played ki o rahi, practiced kei hea te tuna, had a go with some poi and much more.

We listened to waiata while we made poi’s and then learnt (tried to learn) how to use them correctly. We also learnt a few basic words and sentences and will continue using them in and around the whare

Tēna Koutou Katoa. He mihi nui tēnei. We begun our video with a inoi whakamoemiti which started at 12pm. We then proceeded to sing our waiata which is based on the whakataukī, "what is the greatest thing in the world? It is people. As we are a Kaupapa Māori based service in Mental Health & addictions, it was purposeful that we sung our 1st waiata based not only on the of the people that we work alongside of, but the importance in acknowledging the hikoi towards their wellbeing. ( : Our 2nd waiata was to mihi to one of our kaimahi who was celebrating her birthday, so sung her the birthday song, and finally, with a waiata which we wanted to sing out to all those who had joined into the Mahuru Māori event. ( : e te mutunga, he inoi whakamutunga.
