We celebrated Matariki by doing a kapa haka fundraiser in support of our Kapa Haka Roopu Ngā Tai Ahurea taking first stand at Te Mana kuratahi Nationals this year. As I stated above this is their first time standing EVER. The amount of mahi our tamariki put in to kapa haka is definitely paying off. This video is a video to treasure as some of of our whanau joined in with the haka.

Kia ora. I work at Evans Bay Intermediate as a Youth Worker and a Teacher aide and this year for our Matariki celebrations we made a bunch of soup to share with the students and staff. students whanau contributed the vegetables we used. We had a bunch of rangatahi in the kitchen chopping vegetables and making the soup. Me and my whanau had a hangi last night at my brothers place in Makara. We remembered those who'd past, acknowledged our struggles this year and shared one hope or goal for the new year. We blessed our kai with a karakia and ate together while embracing our culture and our whanau. Woke up early this morning to try and see Matariki which we did but unfortunately I was too excited I left my phone inside! Hopefully capture one tomorrow morning.

For these winter months we know how challenging it can become for our older generations, we make the most of the māori tau hou by being around our kui and koroua to let them know how much we love and appreciate them. Theres nothing more grounding than sharing some of our favourite kai and walking into the tau hou with your loved ones.

it tell the stories of matariki of the seven stars and how we remember our loves ones and celebrated our maori new year and celebrate matariki

We have been learning the song Matariki by Sharon Holt in te reo and NZ sign as well as learning the names of the nine stars and what they mean. Poutukawa is special to me as I think it is always important to acknowledge the past.

This simple picture is our simple way of celebrating life - our small victories from our work and everyday lives, the start of the 2nd half of the year 2021 and most of all, celebrating Matariki. Small and simple gatherings like this makes it more special because we get to listen and exchange different stories about ourselves. This is what makes a small group more intimate. As I start to learn not just Te Reo Maori but as well as Tikanga Maori, this is a perfect example of embracing the Maori culture. Nau mai nga hua, Nau mai nga pai, Nau mai kia nui, Kia hawere ai! Manawatia a Matariki! Ka pai!

We celebrated Matariki as an ECE centre with a family night, shared kai, performances and a disco. At the beginning of the night I did a mihi whakatau and whilst I mentioned the ocasion, I used the kaiköhau and welcomed Matariki and the new year.

Learnt a new kaikōhau! ❤️

Nau mai ngā hua Nau mai ngā pai Nau mai kia nui Kia hāwere ai

It is not how much or how little you have that makes you great or small, but how much or how little you accomplish with what you have.

Kia ora This year my kura is holding a Matariki Lantern Walk. All the whānau from our school are invited to come and watch our Kapa Haka group perform, walk out under the stars with our lanterns and share soup and bread together. We started this a couple of years ago and it's so awesome to see it now embraced by the whole school and community.

We are going to get up and say a prayer to the souls we have lost that were held in the net this year, we will spend time together and share a meal as a whanau as it rises.

It is such a blessing to have whanau surrounding me. A couple of the best parts of matariki are watching the stars with my whanau and having fire dinners. The Maori culture and language has become an increasingly important part of my life, and I hope that my knowledge and my family's knowledge of Maori grows in the years to come.
