Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori 2021 | Your Moments

From schools, to workplaces to whānau and friends. Thousands of New Zealanders stopped to share in a moment of unity for our people and our language. In joining our Māori Language Moment, you became part of a movement that began a generation ago.

Kia kaha te reo Māori!
Kia kaha Aotearoa!

My colleague and I did the Kahoot quiz available online. I was thrilled to win, not only because I am competitive but mainly because I was really impressed with how many Maori words and phrases I know! I did not grow up in NZ so I didn't learn basic Maori at school. All of my te reo has been learned across the last five years.

At our Kura we celebrated our Māori Language Moment with social distance gathering korero (Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori) and through tākaro (playing the Kahoot from the reomaori site).

I sang Ka waiata.

On Tuesday I did a mihi to the whanau in the hospital wing at Kiri Te Kanawa Resthome at lunch time. There were about 20 whanau with approximately 8 staff members. I then said karakia mo te kai for them in te reo. Also on Wednesday I went and called Bingo for the same area and called the numbers in te reo along with giving little phrases. There were about 16 staff and whanau members in attendance. At mahi in my ward at Hauori Tairawhiti, Te Whare Awhiora (Mental Health) I have put posters up around the ward and also kupu for equipment and fixtures.

Spent my moment working on my Reo course

Some of the Internal Communications teams at Kāinga Ora practising their pepeha's! Kia kaha!

We celebrated by singing and dancing to a You Tube clip produced by Taika Waititi with the cast from his film 'Boy'. We boogied down to Taika and the cast preforming Thriller moves to Poi E by Patea Maori Club. There were 33 kaimahi from the Kainga Ora team in Tamaki Makaurau - our crew are called Programme Raranga - unfortunately no photos but a screen full of dancers in all their forms was a sight to behold! It was a joyous way to celebrate Te Reo Maori.

I did some learning on the 100 maori words that every kiwi should know. My favourites include ka pai, wiata and turangawaewae :-). . . . . learning to continue now! !

My pōtiki and I had a kēmu of Wherawhera. We used the same kupu a couple of times. . . . but it's still good practice.

I ako mātou I ngā tae, ā, tākaro tētahi kēmu kimi tae. E rata ana rātou ki tēnei mahi ako.

I panui ahau ki tāku tamāhine (Te Hua Tuatahi a Kuwi).

A good friend of mine invited me over for dinner, then sent me home with rewana bread and desert. The giving of food is an important part for Maori. This is a time for us to share and show aroha and being together.

I watched a video about Hinewehi Mohi singing the national anthem in Maori before an All Blacks test match for the first time.

Each day on Instagram stories we have posted something we often kōrero in our kainga. My daughter drinks a lot of water so “kei te hiainu koe” is one we use a lot!

Facilitate daily Wānanga for tauiwi staff in my organisation.

When I was four I started school at Rangitikei District High School. Maori was the first language at the school so it was an immersion experience. That was 69 years ago. Recently I listened to the story of Hirini Melbourne who was also brought up in the Urewera. It was transcendent. I love his music. When I was a kid in Rotorua the Kuia spoke Maori to each other and they caught the same bus as me to Whakarewarewa and Waipa where I lived. Most of them had moko. Every time I hear Te Reo spoken or sung it reminds me of my very happy childhood. Now I sing songs to my grandchild. I am a pakeha immigrant from England. I am glad the language is being revived. I am part Welsh and saw how they were able to renew their language. To the joy of my Welsh father.

My girls pent 2 hours getting ready to post this on midday. Listened to music in TeReo

We decided to celebrate our moment with playing games. Pakō and Kahoot!

At Hauturu School we practiced our mihi. Kotuku class watched the premiere. Then we had a discussion on pronunciation that has changed over the years and how we take for granted te Reo Māori being spoken as normal, but this has not always been the case.

Kia ora tatou, e nga mana , e reo, e nga karangaranga. I have very little te reo, understand a little. Ko Tainui te waka, ko Waikato te awa, ko Pirongia te maunga, ko ngati maniapoto te hapu, No Kawhia ahau. Ko Brian toku tane, ko Ephraim raua ko Erica toku tamariki, No reira tena koutou katoa

Kia ora te katoa! KPMG had a home workout session with former All Black wing Nehe Milner-Skudder. It was also wonderful to hear him talk about his relationship with te reo Māori. We also had an amazing session learning about the Pepeha and to build our own to introduce ourselves in hui (meetings). What a fun week!

This is our Māori language moment at NZCER. Kia kaha te reo Māori!

My tamahine and I sharing Pepeha over kai time.

I signed up to an online te reo course.

Doing the kahoot and testing our knowledge of Te Reo :-)

https://productivitypeople. co. nz/ko-grebbeberg-te-maunga-celebrate-te-wiki-o-te-reo-maori/ Celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori Being not Kiwi-born and having arrived in Aotearoa 29 years ago, I feel privileged to introduce myself in formal settings using a mihi or pepeha in Te Reo Māori. By telling the story of who you are, where you are from, and what your connections and associations are, you create the understanding and linkages that form the relationships that lead to meaning and purpose. My Te Reo pronunciation is not great, but I speak it with humbleness and gratitude for the country that welcomed our whānau. My māunga is the Grebbeberg, at all of 52 meters above sea level hardly a hill to many. But a mountain does not need to be tall to be of significance. The battle of the Grebbeberg was a major engagement in WWII in 1940 when the Netherlands fell to the Nazi regime. It is a few kilometers from my university town of Wageningen, where on the 5th of May 1945 in Hotel ‘De Wereld’ the war ended with the capitulation. It is also the town I met my lovely wife 35 years ago, and it is where our only siblings and their families live. Awakeri is my home, but the Grebbeberg is my māunga. So let me celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori and share with you my entire pepeha, not just my māunga: Tēnā koutou katoa Ko Grebbeberg te māunga Ko Akkerdijkse Plassen te roto Nō Netherlands ahau Kei Awakeri tōku kāinga ināianei Ko Lengkeek tōku whānau Ko Henry rāua, ko Elisabeth ōku mātua Ko Liddy taku wahine Ko Geerten Lengkeek tōku ingoa Nō reira, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa

My 8 year old doing the Stuff Maori quiz.

At poupoutanga o te rā, Ratū te 14 o Mahuru, 30 staff from Taumata Arowai took part in a te reo Māori quiz to celebrate the Māori language moment. Kia kaha te reo Māori whānau!

Our tamariki love to participating in poi kanikani so we decided that this was a great opportunity to participate in the moment with something that shows their interests and links to the maori culture.

I am just beginning to learn so for my Māori Language Moment I spent time reading Māori Made Easy, working through some exercises and completing a word search from Māori Made Fun. He iti noa iho taku reo Māori But I’m working to change that!

I did a maori kahoot

I have opened my hui this week with a meeting opening using the Kimihia app! It’s been so awesome giving it a go!

Just trying to get a little bit more Te reo into our daily lives.

Here's me, attempting to keep up with Alemein, who was leading an energetic and FUN Zumba session on Zoom for approximately 50 hoamahi from Whakaata Māori / Māori Television! It was such a great way to connect and celebrate together for Māori Language Moment!

Kia ora, Our Tama has been learning the longest place name. He's got even better now but thought this was a nice video of him. Kia ora, Marley

This is the team at Flick, starting up the Reo Māori Kahoot quiz at 12pm! We ran through the quiz together, listened to some waiata in the background, and had a great time together speaking, reading, and learning te Reo Māori. Kia kaha te Reo Māori!

My effort to participate with this kaupapa on Tuesday at midday was to sing the Lord's Prayer in Maori for my bubble mates, namely my husband and sister who cherished my efforts, thank you.

He pourangi pātaitaitanga i te tari. Tēkau mā ōno ngā tāngata i whai wāhi ai.

I read a couple of lovely waiata and am signing in and out of my emails using te reo Maori

We had a karakia and waiata (Whakataka te hau), accompanied by AJ Te Aho's beautiful YouTube version at https://www. youtube. com/watch?v=uLh0-pT4OQc Then by request from ngā mahihoa, some kōrero about Te Reo, focused on to use Tēnā koe, tēnā kōrua and tēnā koutou. Kia kaha Te Reo Māori!

A pepeha is universal, everyone has a pepeha that links them to their tīpuna / ancestors? A pepeha is a personal introduction of yourself in Māori. It tells people who you are by sharing your geographical connections to your heritage and people. You can make it as short or as long as you like. Ko wai koe? Who are you? Posted on LinkedIn and wero extended

Kia ora koutou 👋 Ko tēnei te wiki o te reo Māori. Ko Catherine Pikholz Green tōku ingoa. Nō Pōrana me Awherika ki te tonga ōku tīpuna. Kei te noho au ki Tāmaki Makaurau. Kia kaha te reo Māori.

Kia ora, my name is Jono Wyeth and I am a Deputy Principal at Green Bay High School. This is a video introducing myself with a short, sharp pepeha - live from my garage office whilst in lockdown in Tāmaki Makaurau. Turou Hawaiki - May the force be with you!

Doing the poi

Kia Ora, Ko Facundo ahai. I took part of a beginner korerotia, Te Reo Māori course on line in Queenstown libraries. Kia kaha Aotearoa Ngā manaakitanga Facundo

I used Maori greetings and sign off's for my emails, and used a little Maori with some of my staff who are confident te reo speakers. I was really happy to see members of my team embrace Te reo o te wiki and they made poi, used karakia at meal times, listened to waiata. Hopefully we can continue the momentum and encourage more te reo in the work place instead of once a year! !

I started and ended a work meeting with a Karakia. Using the karakia to bookend the meeting grounded the participants to the meeting and created a positive environment for discussion.

Did a Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori quiz with my hoamahi.

To celebrate reo maori. Our Kohanga did a kanikani to the waiata Mahuru Māori from Pere Wihongi.

I joined our colleagues from NZDF kapa haka for an online waiata. I think they have posted it here somewhere! :)

I shared my mihi and got a classmate to share hers.

Many of our classes had a wonderful time participating in the Kahoot quiz that you provided, also playing the online te reo games throughout the week. Thank you for these wonderful resources.

At 12pm on Tuesday I was listening to the waiata anthems spotify playlist, love this playlist! During te wiki o te reo Māori, we've also been learning waiata for kids (part of our lockdown home learning) AND taking the time to check our pronunciation of a few locations and organisations with Māori names.
