Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori 2021 | Your Moments

From schools, to workplaces to whānau and friends. Thousands of New Zealanders stopped to share in a moment of unity for our people and our language. In joining our Māori Language Moment, you became part of a movement that began a generation ago.

Kia kaha te reo Māori!
Kia kaha Aotearoa!

To celebrate te Wiki o Te Reo Māori we had around 120 members of the Araraurangi (Air NZ) Digital team learn some Te Reo Māori basics over 2 days. For Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori a collective 'Kia Ora' was spoken from hoamahi across Aotearoa on our virtual Teams call. During our hui we also issued a challenge to pronounce the world’s longest place name! Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori <3

I decided to practice negations with my partner that my Te reo teacher helped teach us. This is through a Te reo Māori course I’m doing at Te Wānanga o Ruakawa. Shout out to Ray Peeti for being an amazing kaiako!

Kia kaha te reo Maori. Tihei mauri ora

My #TauiwiPepeha

Our preschool got together we sung some songs and read some pukapuka. Our goal is to have Te Reo Māori in our everyday korero

I sang Hine E Hine at home while looking out on my local maunga …. . kate

Team 12 played a Te Tinana Kahoot together to help us learn the kupu. Fun!

We chose to korero (in our bubble of two) and enjoyed watching te reo being taught in French on YouTube. Ka korero te reo Maori maua, a, nous parlons Francais aussi! So exciting to join with so many for Te Wiki o te Reo Maori these days, in the early 1980s it was more low key, but our student Maori club visited local primary schools with kapa haka, a bit of te reo, and stories. We have come a long way, and may the support and celebration grow ever stronger. Kia kaha!

This video is of me trying to say a mihi and sing the song Tiaho Mai Ra that I just learned this week.

This song is special to me, my daughter sings it in her kapahaka group and sung it at the same time as me but zoom with the rest of her school to also celebrate Te Reo week, it's also a song that I sung with friends during a difficult period in my life and it reminds me of the mana I have even when times are tough. I'm so proud of my Maori heritage and I know my koro would be looking down smiling.

My children love kapa haka & are trying to learn the chords to go with the song. They are embracing learning words & basic sentences.

Changed class timetable to Te Reo Read Maui and the Sun for big book for the whole week. Read a different Maori themed picture book to the class every day. Did the morning and afternoon roll in Te Reo - both the teacher and the students. Maori commands to gain students attention. Used Maori names for class equipment when handing it out. Played Maori waiata while students completed their artwork.

We read an article in Spanish about the importance of the Maori language and discussed key Maori words, and how they are part of Kiwi culture, We then did an activity with the story of "Tāne separates the Earth and the Sky". Students had to put the text back together for it to make sense.

I shared this on Facebook: The pronunciation probably hasn’t improved but here’s a song in Te Reo and English I wrote some years ago for a mental health conference. I’m a inconsistent beginner in the indigenous language of the country I live in and until I moved here would have raised a colonial eyebrow at efforts in my own country to proctect and celebrate the indigenous languages of my Celtic ancestors. Despite my accent, I was born to a Scottish mother with Irish ancestry and an English father of recent Welsh/Irish ancestry. A kaumata I workers with in my first year in Aotearoa told me two things. Give te reo a go, even if it feels awkward and you feel you’re getting it wrong. And if I wanted to understand his culture, I might benefit from understanding my own. At the time I didn’t even realise I had one! I’ve been on that journey ever since. Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori #tereo Kaua e mate wheke mate ururoa! Don’t you give up now Though the struggle is hard Just keep on going somehow You’ve come so far Don’t you give up now, Just push on through Keep on going somehow With what you know is true

The staff and visitors at Victory Community Centre (Nelson) stood out on the front steps of the centre and sung Purea Nei loud and proud at midday on Sept 14th!

This week I have used Maori greetings in my emails, which is a first for me. I have also taught "Wairua Tapu" to my Take Note Singing group, and they loved it. We already sing quite a lot of Maori waiata, and occasionally give concerts with the Wellington Regional Maori Choir. Congratulations on a well-presented Maori Language Week.

We reside in Tāmaki Makaurau so with the current lockdown we decided to participate in Tongan Language week and now Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and teach our tamariki (6, 4, 4) some words of their choice. It has been really awesome to see how they have enjoyed the experience, well 2 of 3 have. Our aim is to be able to teach Mr 6 his pepeha and mom and dad learn theirs too. Kia ora
