Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori 2021 | Your Moments

From schools, to workplaces to whānau and friends. Thousands of New Zealanders stopped to share in a moment of unity for our people and our language. In joining our Māori Language Moment, you became part of a movement that began a generation ago.

Kia kaha te reo Māori!
Kia kaha Aotearoa!

This video was done as part of my Kura putting together a ‘Pass It On’ Challenge for Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori. We had to be doing something with Te Rakau. My pup Kowhai decided she was gonna help! He ngahau - it was fun 🤩

A little bit of Te Reo from me - re-learning pronunciation after first learning in the 80's. I am part-Maori and love learning the language. My dad was punished for speaking Te Reo so feels good to be learning it and teaching him a little too. Nga Mihi Aroha Claudine

My two cousins and i are working together to create a kākahu for our marae in Omanaia to be finished for the opening of the new whare kai. We do not live close to each other - one in Tauranga, one in Kaikohe and myself in Kaeo. The panel from Tauranga was sent in the mail to join to mine and this was us meeting in Kerikeri to bring the third panel together with the first two. My pepi is three and he is starting to use the kupu he is learning at Matangirau Ohanga Reo.

This song is very special as it was created by fellow passionate ECE teachers in Hamilton.

This is a snapshot from a FB post I had celebrating Maori Language week I wrote (I hope correctly) to my stepdad saying I felt brave learning te reo Maori

I facilitate Health and Safety courses. During lockdown we have been doing this by Zoom. I decided to introduce myself as the kaiwhakaako by using my pepeha. I know that I should go this usually rather than sometimes, always even! ! Tena koutou katoa Ko Tarawera te maunga Ko Horomanga te awa Ko Svenska te Iwi Ko Christopher tōku ingoa Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou. The participants responded eithe in English following a format or in te reo. I practised a lot before delivering it and it felt so good! !

Kia ora whānau! I am a kaiako, so for our Māori Moment on Tuesday I helped my learners to create their own mihi through the 'My Mihi' challenge. It was awesome to see them engage in the history of their whānau and use te reo Māori to present it. Kia kaha te reo Māori!

As a Ngati Whatua descendant, I regret being unable to speak or understand Te Reo and my limited knowledge of my heritage. I am trying to improve on that and have started using Te Reo in my written communications (emails) and also incorporating small words in my every day use when possible (and when my memory works). A very good friend and her husband are very patiently tutoring me in Te Reo.

My tamariki and I listened to CD storybooks in Te Reo, read the story of Paikea, and played the game Tākaro! I also tried to use as much Te Reo as I possibly could for the hour ❤️

This is a waiata ringa the students of Waitotara school were taught by a tutor they had last year. It is performed by both the senior and juniour class.

'Ko Tenei Te Wā' is a new waiata we are learning and "E Kereru" is one we know well.

This is just a little activity me and my workplace did on Teams in lockdown to have a bit of fun and learn a few new words while we were at it. Everyone grabbed an object they had near them on the call and we looked up the te reo Māori translations for each of them and made a collaborative video using what we found. :)

I learnt the word cat in Te Reo Maori and made a set of counting from 1-5 flashcards in Maori using photos of my cats. Here is one of them.

My Maori language moment has been incorporating my pepeha into my c. v to introduce myself. This is the first time I will have publicly used my pepeha. After being out of the workforce for some time because of medical issues, I am proud to be entering back into the workforce as mana wahine.

Kia ora! This month is the anniversary of becoming a Kiwi! I finally gathered enough maia and started taking classes to learn the language of tangata whenua. Every day, my te reo kupu kete is filled with more new kupu. The process of creating my pepeha this week was very emotional, reflecting on all of the places around the world that I feel are parts of "home" for me.

I am a RTLB teacher and supporting teachers and students with their learning from home- this slide (photo) was shared with my school so they can have some wellbeing fun during Te Wiki o te Reo Maori. My video clip is a challenge I completed for my RTLB team for Te Wiki o te Reo Maori as we are having a competition. I had a lot of fun making this with my family. . . . Rosie normally doesn't bite food out of my hands but we did several takes and she was totally over it by the end! !

Posted this on my “Ingrid Leary MP for Taieri” page at noon.

Kia ora! Ko Annette ahau. For my reo moment I listened to waiata on spotify as I filled in some covid lockdown hours making a Manu Tukutuku. Now . . . to see if it flies! ! Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori !

As a school we gathered together to share in karakia, waiata, mihi sharing and Kai together.

So sorry for such a close up video. I have never videoed myself. I feel too self conscious but I had to face my fear for this movement and was horrified when I watched it as it’s so close up! It was my first time speaking fully in te reo and uttering some of those words which I learnt to pronounce using Kia Rere app just moments before I recorded this video to make sure I had proper pronunciation.

My wife and I learnt "Te Aroha" Karakia and sang together - seemed appropriate for the day somehow - Love, truth, and peace to us all :-) Noho ora mai P & K

Kia ora! I created my pepeha and have practiced saying it. I will be sharing it with my work colleagues tomorrow.

We are lucky enough to live very close to Te Noho Kotahitanga Marae on the Unitec campus so we made a hikoi over and as we walked we talked about what reo we know and when we arrived we had a kōrero about this stunning marae. I am a teacher aide at the local school and I love that my daughters will learn Te Reo and will hopefully be able to be fluent by the time they leave school. My husband and I are enjoying learning with them. Our 7 year old then presented her school Karakia outside the marae door! Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori and in NZ sign! Super proud! !

My husband and I watched an RNZ podcast on the pronunciation of Maori, during which we practiced saying the phrases. This so important! Keep up the great work! ! ❤️❤️ Kia pai te rā!

I am an Early Childhood Kaiako and shared this video to my tamariki and whanau at my Centre Te Ako. This video is about learning alphabet in New Zealand three official languages.

We had heaps of fun learning waiata and Tī rākau.

We sang a waiata over Zoom. One person led with her microphone on and we all sang with microphones on mute.

Since we're in Lpckdown, I shared posts with our preschool families online - we shared videos of ourselves (the kaiako) singing, reading and teaching. I tuned into the tebwiki o te reo Māori video on YouTube and shared it on my Facebook page while my pēpi slept. When she woke up, she joined me in listening to Taonga Pūoro being played ❤ koa kaha te reo Māori.

Our preparation began a fortnight before. Our Cultural Affairs Coordinator hosted two reo Māori workshops leading up to to Māori Language Week, to teach staff about the history and language of the Māori people. Staff who are all beginning their Māori learning journey were encouraged to create and learn their mihimihi. The third and final workshop was held during Māori Language Week and on Tuesday at noon, staff shared their mihimihi with colleagues live via Zoom. Our external contribution to the Māori Language Moment was a combined video of some staff doing their mihimihi in clips that they self-filmed while in lockdown. The combined short video was posted on our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and You Tube sites. We also challenged other diplomatic missions to participate in the Māori Language Moment on social media, helping to inspire our hoa at the Australian, Canadian and British High Commissions as well as the Embassies of the Netherlands, Ireland and France.

I always loved this previous waiata. And when Maori students sang it harmonised , it gave me goosebumps. Arohanui Theo

Ou team have all recorded our pepeha. I read mine out for the moment and am slowly learning it by heart. Kia kaha!

Westminster Christian School is still in Alert Level 4 lockdown so I sent a request out to our students to share videos of how they are learning te Reo Maori. The video also shares a couple of memories from when we were at school singing the national anthem in te reo and when our intermediates performed our school haka at their sports camp!

At our school we provided our staff with a template to complete our pepeha, include our favourite whakataukī, a kup or kiwaha we would use all week and a stretch goal for ourselves. This is mine

In class, we sang a waiata together x

At 12pm 14th September I was working with Java Dance Company. For the Māori Language Moment I was going to sing Purea Nei and see if they wanted to join me. Funnily enough that was exactly what they had planned to do so I played uke and we all sang together.

This is a whakatoukī that has been in our classroom for many years. This Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori we chose to kōrero and share with our tamariki and their whānau on our School Instagram page.

Nau mai! ki te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. Ia ra ka hikoi au i a maatau kuri, kei te mahi ahau i nga whakahau māori.

My daughters and I signed in and listened to this lovely composition of Maori songs. We didn't understand the words but we loved learning about the music of the Maori culture. We love living is this beautiful country that is rich with the culture.

Karakia each morning, before kai and in the evening. We answered our telephone in reo Māori which will stay for good. So will the karakia.

We are a community based early childhood centre who use te reo Māori throughout our day, every day with ngā tamariki. For the Māori Language Moment this year our ataahua Kaiako Nicky stepped up to lead our centre in waiata. Bringing more waiata experiences into practice was a goal of her professional growth as a Kaiako this year. We are all very proud to walk alongside Nicky on her journey to support and promote the use of te reo Māori in early childhood environment. ❤️🤍🖤
