Kia ora everyone, As it is Te wiki o te reo Maori (Maori language week) I thought I'd play a small part in it by learning a Maori word. 🌿 The Maori word Makoha has the meaning: "To be tranquil, undisturbed, gentle, compassionate, kindly, considerate, amiable, placid, kind-hearted. " While I'm not Maori myself, I'm all for embracing all culture's. 😍 I thought this word was kapai and it was applicable for massage therapy because in order for any treatment to be successful and reduce pain, it has to be done in a considerate and kind way. 🙌🏽 #maorilanguageweek #massagetherapy #supportlocalnz #nzsmallbusiness #wairarapa #holistichealth

After an opening karakia and introductions (including mihi and pepeha), the six ARCC staff learnt a simple waiata together, and practised some basic Te Reo Māori. We talked about the day, Te Reo Māori and indigenous languages and then closed with a karakia.

I have been sharing a kupu o te ra with my work whanau via our employee facebook group - most of our tema are pre-dominantly of Filipino or Russian descent so it is very new for them.

I am an ECE teacher in Tamaki Makaurau and we held a zoom “mat time” with all of our tamariki and sung some waiata that they all know aswell.

Room 25 have been starting everyday this week with this karakia. Kia pai te ra!

We had an awesome team quiz via zoom across our 3 sites (Lower Hutt, Nelson and Palmerston North) led by our kaumatua. The quiz tested our knowledge of Te Reo, as well as Maori history. We started and finished with karakia and sang both our team waiata, as well as a few other waiata. It was a beautiful time for our diverse team.

I am a little camera shy but for my Māori Language Moment I spent some time singing along to videos on Youtube to really embrace the language and feel that connection.

Room 17 have been using Te Reo in their online learning this week. They kōrero with each other about their feelings, practice the Karakia and Waiata, using macrons when writing Te Reo words and have have access to different creative activities such as making poi & kowhaiwhai pattern bookmarks.

The children created a diorama of Marama and Rona, and retelling the story in their own words. They made a small whare and the river with Marama in the sky and of course the tree and branch.

Tekau mā Tahi put together a Te Wiki o te Reo Māori task board that we could share with other classes around the school. We talked about the different tasks we could do to inspire other tamariki to learn Te Reo. We used the titles from the Māori language digital task board that was shared with teachers. (Whakarongo, Waiata, Kōrero, Tākaro, Pānui and Ako) students also added two more titles of their choice. We can't wait to test these out on other classes :)

Also big up to Public Programming and Pou Tikanga teams at Te Papa for their daily activities to support Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori 2021. I don't identify as Māori as I am not Māori but it doesn't mean the Māori culture isn't relevant for me on all levels. On the contrary :)

Waiata session

For Maori Language Week all staff participated in looking up words in Te Reo and pronouncing them. The small posters were then posted around the practice so we could practice speaking Te Reo.

I wrote a blog called: A Korero from Te Reo Makuku My business is called Moist Words, and I used a few Maori dictionaries and resources to come up with a translation "Te Reo Makuku" and wrote this blog, which is peppered with Te Reo. https://moistwords. co. nz/f/a-korero-from-te-reo-makuku

My mihimihi

Room 16 made rakau sticks online using a variety of materials, some used newspaper, magazines, paper towel rolls etc. We then listened to the waiata E Papa Waiari and watched a youtube clip of how to use rakau sticks. The children are now sending me videos of their actions and I will link them altogether. We have all caught a rakau stick from the left and thrown to the right so it will look like we are passing to each other (hopefully).

I spoke Te Reo Māori with my friends and listed to Te Reo Māori song from Stan Walker.

As a relatively new country compared to the continents I love the idea of us building a history. As a pakeha I fully embrace that history going back to the beginning of our human habitation and including the culture and beliefs from all that now make up our melting pot of peoples.

My lovely form class chose a whakatauki or karakia that meant something to them and made a poster for our classroom walls. Ka pai!

I enjoyed listening to the Waiata Anthems on spotfiy.

We were learning to count in to the thousands for our moment, we also all learned the mihi poto and were brave and shared this with our roopu! Karawhiua!
