Te Waka Unua School - Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 23

I met with Māori-medium teaching colleagues to kōrero about how we can support Te Reo Māori in our work in schools. We also viewed a very moving video clip with Hinewehi Mohi, MNZM, who first sang the national anthem in te reo at the 1999 Rugby World Cup game - with some backlash. . .

I looked up some Kiwaha for rugby and found some phrases to yell out during my boy games at The global games tournament Taupo. Wā pīro! - Try time Tukuna te pōro - pass the ball Whakarapa rātou - smash em (hubby yelled out this one, I just couldn’t 😂) Whana! - kick it along with Maranga Mai! & oma! 😆

I was with colleagues and we gathered the tamariki to sing a waiata

Akomanga 14 created a list of ways we wanted to celebrate te reo Māori. We decided to practice more waiata - learn a new one, create some art, work together, play Māori games, and learn a new whakatauki

Both events demonstrated the mana and strength of our tamariki, kaimahi, whānau and hapori whānui. It is wonderful to be part of our rohe - with over 13 kura in Te Awa Kairangi ki Uta sharing their celebrations :) Kia kaha te reo Māori! 🖤🤍❤️

I whakamahi i ngā momo waiata i akongia e mātou. Kahore tenei mahi te take tuatahi mo te wā tuku reo engarī hei aha. He waiata, he kata, he harikoa, he māori! This wasn’t the original plan for wā tuku reo, but we were in class and a couple of boys just asked to do some waiata. I told them I was going to record so sing up lol. Mea rawa ake, it went viral. I ended up sharing it because it reflects our reo journey perfectly in our kura. It is a cool journey with ups and downs, sometimes the wheels fall off but we can haka, sing and laugh. E ai ki te whakatauāki a Dory, me kahoe tonu ana, Mauri ora!

I wrote an assignment about the history of te Reo Māori.

In my school, we celebrated it from the bell, to lunchtime activities, and daily activities in our classes. We sang songs, shared Kai and had an amazing time! I’m absolutely looking forward to Te Wiki o te Reo Māori next year.

Myself and my Speech Language Therapy colleagues made a conscious effort to use Te Reo greetings at all times in our department. Half of our team were not born in NZ so it was a great chance for all of us to practise our pronunciation! We also had a Te Reo word of the day relating to our role. We’re definitely going to keep it up!

Me and my brother said short sentences to each other in Māori, and we both did some art.

I was able to learn this karakia using the rakau at Te Whare Hononga in Ngāmotu.
