On 14 September at 12pm over 1 million of you took part in the Māori Language Moment. In joining our Māori Language Moment, you became part of a movement that began a generation ago. Joined a Hui sharing at work on my iPad in the car in between oncology massages doing home visits. Wrote out my pepeha and had time to do some whakatauki and a waiata Te Arohanui. I sung and recorded a waiata by our Executive Leadership Team, and I sought out my Maori job title from our Maruiti team and changed it on my email signature.

I am a kaiako. For the month of Mahuru I have been attempting to only use Te reo from 9am - 10am everyday in our mainstream classroom. For our ‘moment’ we did waiata, we listen to ‘Tua’ by Stan Walker and played pronunciation kēmu.

My Moko Kaiah Manaia Robinson loves her Kapaz! She is inspired by her Uncle Pohatu Matiaha (aged 3). They both attend preschool together and Kapa Haka, waiata Maori and karakia are an integral part of their daily routine in a mainstream ECE service. . The kaiako (mostly pakeha) are excellent at promoting tikanga and honouring the place of tangata whenua. 💕

Te Reo Mauri language for me sounds romantic when spoken by a fluent speaker. The level I aspire to be one day. Each word has great depth & meaning. Our Tipuna were great leaders who fought to keep our language alive & so shall I and my children! Even at the age of 41 it's never too late to learn. Kia kaha whānau. Within our work broker organisation we are upholding the Māori Language week by spending 30mins a day learning Karakia, simple hello, how are you and goodbye greetings to which we converse to our clients. Tomorrow we will try and learn tutira mai ngā iwi. Tū meke 👍

All through the week, I, as the Music Teacher for our school, sang with the children and taught the children the meaning of the words of Te Aroha, He Honore, Tutira Mai, and the Maori Alphabets Song A Haka Mana. The Maori Vowels and Consonants.

In Christchurch we are learning content for the annual Christchurch Primary Schools Cultural Festival. What is extra special is we have joined bilingual units between Te Kura o Oraka and Te Kura o Hato Opani to create an extra special performance. On Monday we spent the whole day together practising!

A select few from our local mental health unit day program including myself participated in a gathering of hospital staff and mental health patients singing multiple waiata in the hawkes bay hospital courtyard from 12pm for around half an hour whilst other staff etc sat and had lunch. We all really enjoyed it and it brought smiles to us all. What a awesome way to acknowledge our beautiful language.

At work we’ve been learning some mātauranga Māori and as part of Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori - the Māori language moment we celebrated by singing some waiata. We started of with karakia and sang songs as Te Aroha, E toru ngā mea, E hara I te mea, AIO ki te Aorangi, Purea Nei and E Honorē. Here are two of our songs ❤️

I taught 12 common te reo words to my ESOL class. My learners were from Ecuador, Chile, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, China and Thailand. We played a te reo memory game. Things got a bit competitive! But that just meant everyone worked really hard to learn the kupu hou.

Wintec held any event in our student hub where we interrupted our students lunch to teach a phrase. Ko te reo kia tika, ko te reo kia rere, ko te reo kia Maaori. We saw about 50+ students register through wintec for the Maaori moment which was very encouraging for us all. Mauri ora e kara maa!

This is me on Titirangi Maunga just yesterday 16/09/20 not only celebrating Maori Language week but also celebrating life itself. I can see Turanga / Gisborne with a 360 degree view. I have been climbing this hill since I could walk and the view is always different to me. I can embrace my Maori identity and embrace the beauty of being Maori. I am proud to be Maori and a strong Maori Woman too. At the back of me is a monument/map that traces the voyage of Maori first arriving in Turanga from Tahiti.
