I was already on my own personal journey learning my lineage, my whakapapa, my people and as this challenge came up it felt fitting to start a contemporary korowai. One that I can weave my korero of the past, future and present into. This shall too become a beautiful addition of my life, my family for many generations to come just like te reo maori will be spoken and shared freely with love and understanding.

And, every lunchtime we have a scavenger hunt and whoever wins gets a chocolate bar. We sure have a jam-packed week for Te Wiki o to Maori!

I always look forward to this time of the year. It's a time to continue sharing what I love about the language and engaging Kaimahi by supporting them and encouraging them to learn but more importantly, to speak our reo. I run week long 15min information sessions and break it down for my team and we love quizzes so I always end with a quiz or Kahoot to bring everything together to consolidate the learning

I carried out a new karakia, continued to speak & sing in reo Maaori and email in reo Maaori, I sent an email to a whanaunga fully in te reo Maaori as we can both understand each other, I hope to do more during the week also.

Signed up to te reo classes at Unitec, starting October ♥️ Looking forward to reconnecting with the language of my tipuna.

I’m English and moved to Aotearoa over ten years ago. I started Te Reo Māori at EIT and learnt karakia, my mihi, whakapapa with my class of 12! I chose to do this as I felt disconnected from my community and wanted to understand Māori on a deeper level. I knew very little kupu that I did not feel confident to use. I encouraged my best friends one who is Māori and one from Canada to join me on this course. Our teacher is incredibly kind, patient and compassionate which has made this journey feel all the more accessible. It’s been challenging but I feel so much more connected to Aotearoa already. I have a deeper reverence for the land, the Māori communities. The language is beautiful and full of aroha and mana.

Sang waiata at Church

Challenged all my students to greet their other teachers in the Kura using te reo Māori in the hope that those non-Māori teachers will reply in like manner.

This week, our family had the pleasure of celebrating Te Reo Māori Week, and it was an experience full of learning and connection. We started by immersing ourselves in Māori language resources, practicing basic phrases, and understanding the cultural significance behind them. We also participated in traditional Māori activities, like kapa haka performances and cooking Māori dishes. Each day was an opportunity to engage with the language and culture more deeply, and it was heartwarming to see everyone in the family excited and involved. Te Reo Māori Week has not only helped us gain a greater appreciation for Māori heritage but also strengthened our family's bond as we explored and embraced new traditions together. It was a meaningful reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating our diverse cultural roots.

I embodied the mana that my ancestors instilled in me, to speak a little Maori this week hehehe

As a volunteer Girl Guide leader, I always ensure we’re using basic Te Reo for the girls to learn what different items and introductions are! We even took time to learn the Girl Guide saying in Te Reo. It’s not a lot, but it’s a start at a very, very young age to get the younger generation involved in keeping this beautiful language alive! !
