Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori 2021 | Your Moments

From schools, to workplaces to whānau and friends. Thousands of New Zealanders stopped to share in a moment of unity for our people and our language. In joining our Māori Language Moment, you became part of a movement that began a generation ago.

Kia kaha te reo Māori!
Kia kaha Aotearoa!

This is the karakia I prayed today over my tina (lunch).

I learned a waiata and got together online with my niece to sing it to my pēpi.

We made paraoa parae for the first time. We researched words we didn’t know, and used them in our korero. We used a karakia before Kai. We used te reo in all our comms with workmates, friends and whānau. But what the tamiriki most enjoyed was crafting bookmarks lovingly adorned with te reo Māori.

A few from the team played a Kahoot Quiz

We had an online te reo Maori class ran by Deacon Fisher, designed to help our people with pronunciation as well as teach some basic greetings and kīwaha.

I learned a waiata and got together online with my niece to sing it to my pēpi.

I wore my kia kaha te reo t-shirt and at 12pm I completed a te reo Māori lesson using Education Perfect.

Our office stopped work and played a game of scattegories in te reo.

I am an early childhood teacher and I upload songs and stories every day. Today I had more of a Maori focus with songs and stories. This video records my session.

Too slow and too musclely to get a tshirt done, so we got mugs done instead🤗 So proud to share this moment in time! Kia kaha ki te ako i te Reo Maaori! Kia kaha ki te Koorero i te Reo Rangatira!

We completed Mahuru Maori Moment by completing the kahoot quiz

We used Te Reo greetings, and also had a good korero about what else we would like to learn x

Well would you look at that, it is Māori language week. Now those of you who have been straddled with the burden of knowing me know how much I like my languages, my cultures, and the long-term survival of both of those things, think I even did a degree on it when I was young and crazy. Being locked up in Melbourne, there aren't that many options for me to celebrate this week, but hey, I am having fun playing as Kupe in Civ VI!

For my Māori Language moment, I chose to introduce myself in my 12PM meeting with a pepeha (who I am, where I am from, and what's important to me), and shared a whakatauki (a Māori proverb).

Tried to learn some basic words using Education Perfect. We also shared the EP Competition to encourage students and their teachers to participate and learn at the same time.

For our Māori language moment today some of our staff chose to tākaro (play) reo māori kahoot made by Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. All smiles after some healthy competition 😊

This year I recorded myself reading a story for the tamariki at my centre, a well known children’s book, Hairy Maclary, ahakoa, I read the book in Te reo Māori. I listened to some beautiful waiata while practicing some reo phrases.

We matched facial expressions to descriptions in Te Reo - so people could answer the question "Kei te pehea koe?" Then practised the pronunciation :)

I wrote this pepeha/mihi with the help of our Māori teacher 2 years. Rather than use a generic one, I wrote one that meant a lot to me and reflected my family. I have been married for 40years and my husband's family played an important part of my life since I was 18 and it also reflects our family future in mentioning my grandchildren.

We are all tauira in a Te Reo course, so we decided to get together for a Zoom to kōrero for Te Rangaihi Reo Māori.

Kua tuku kē :)

Ngā Uri ā Tāne (our newly established Māori unit) and Tutamoe (our whānau class) made a Tik Tok video to Rob Ruha's - Ka Hao AND over the speaker system, I greeted the rest of the school in Te Reo Māori and thanked them for participating (400+ people) in this historic event for our language . . . then played Pere Wihongi's - Mahuru Māori! ! ! !
