Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori 2021 | Your Moments

From schools, to workplaces to whānau and friends. Thousands of New Zealanders stopped to share in a moment of unity for our people and our language. In joining our Māori Language Moment, you became part of a movement that began a generation ago.

Kia kaha te reo Māori!
Kia kaha Aotearoa!

We also got to hear about two pūrākau that were significant to the presenters, who connect with the whenua it spoke about. Alongside our planned agenda, you see a few of us partaking :) We are committed to continuing our exciting journey, incorporating te Reo Māori in all aspects of our mahi across the Canterbury health system. The video contains a reading of the Te Reo translation of a KARAKIA from the Muslim Scripture; the Holy Qur'an. The whole book has been translated into Te Reo and published under the title; Kurānu Tapu. The translation of the Holy Qur'an into Te Reo Maori is an achievement of historic nature. One aspect of this achievement that makes it yet more momentous is that the translation is done by a non-native, Mr. Shakil Ahmad Monir, an Ahmadi Muslim scholar from Pakistan who worked tirelessly for more than two decades to ensure the accomplishment of this noble project.

I did a mihi to celebrate Te Reo Maori

Today some of our senior class of Years 5 & 6 tamariki at Monte Cecilia Catholic School in Mt Roskill, Auckland and all of the kaiako gathered on a video call to greet each other in Te Reo Maori, to karakia, korero and question in basic phrase using Te Reo and to waiata together. We actually lost track of time and by the time we had finished, we had spent about 25 minutes in total, using our beautiful Maorinlanguage together. We all loved it and enjoyed putting ourselves up for the week of using new, (or a bit rusty) phrases.

Tēnā koutou katoa - what an absolutely fabulous whakawhanaungatanga time we enjoyed together over our lunch hour today. BDO Gisborne kicked off our "Mahuru Māori" moment with a mihi and opening karakia to welcome all staff in attendance. We then listened to the uplifting beats, whilst taking in the beautiful scenery of our East Coast paradise from Rob Ruha's recent waiata anthem release, Ka Hao - 35. The icing on the cake was definitely the delicious kai, and seeing all the smiles on the faces of our staff who have missed the face to face contact on the back of another lockdown period. Tau kē!

This is out awesome Year 9 Health/P. E class here in Whaingaroa. We are a very competitive bunch of students. Today we decided to split the class into 7 teams. Each team battled it out in a number of 'MOMENT' challenges. The menu for todays feast included the classic mauī/matau stick game, a school waiata battle which was taken out by our boys (who normally sit quietly in the corner), a Guess Who/What Kupu game (girls thought Hōhipera was a food. . . Hospital Lol), and we finished of with a well know waiata that had been cut into pieces and the students had to put it back together (forgot to say they had to do it in 60 seconds). We laughed, we sang, we played, we made a Māori Language Moment.
