From schools, to workplaces to whānau and friends. Thousands of New Zealanders stopped to share in a moment of unity for our people and our language. In joining our Māori Language Moment, you became part of a movement that began a generation ago.

For my Māori moment I ran the reo Māori Kahoot quiz with my hoamahi to test them on their te reo Māori knowledge in a fun and inclusive way. I even learnt a couple of kupu hou as well!

Through my awesome workplace - an accessible media company - we shared phrases and words we love in te Reo Māori through Microsoft teams. We learnt from each other and it was awesome!

Kia ora. While working at our marae today, one of our colleagues shared a beautiful karakia with my class. We farewelled each other using "Ka kite apopo! " and I went through my mihimihi at home at 12 noon. Tomorrow evening, our Te Ataarangi class are meeting online to continue our Level 1 studies. Nga mihi.

My work team met online from all across Aotearoa, we opened & closed our session with karakia, and we sang waiata. Ka rawe!

Kaua e whakama has been my kīwaha the past few weeks and Karawhuia! ! I thought I knew my pepeha and was confident in my korero but after a whānau reunion I realised I had been mixing my Nans whakapapa from Te Rarawa with my Poppa’s from Ngati Kuri. So now I am relearning the correct version. I hope this is okay xx

Horoia ō ringaringa! Wash your hands! Our tamariki love singing the 'Kina kina' waiata I first learnt at kōhanga reo with my irāmutu nearly 20 years ago! We adapted it to help them learn how to wash their hands thoroughly. Ngā mihi ki Pānia Papa, we referenced the translations in Kat Quin's Kiwi & Friends Māori Picture Dictionary & Siouxsie Wiles' advice about good hand washing. We celebrated the Te Reo Māori moment by saying "Kia Kaha te reo Māori" as a school!

Kia ora koutou e te reo Māori whānau. This week I am continuing to study and practice te reo Māori with the help of our tutor whaea Pippa Hakopa who comes to Rakiura and teaches a class of about 20 people every week! We kōrero, use our Te kākano pukapuka, play games, learn Waiata. Have wānanga and learn so much more! She is helping and encouraging bringing forth the history of Rakiura and te reo Māori to us all.

The Haka represents the Maori ceremonial dance or challenge. It is seen before sports games and at Maori festivals. The one that Max was dancing was for kids.

I am learning new reo and phrases and waiata to use in our kai area and sharing it with tamariki and their whanau. I am also practicing my mihi. ❤️

Briar was learning the waiata Tutira mai nga iwi at her early learning service prior to lock down . . . she is yet to say an official 'ka kite' to them as she has turned five during this lockdown in Tamaki Makaurau - we thought to celebrate our reo Māori moment singing this legendary waiata together. Kia ora Koutou, at our Heartist Townhall (Kaimahi Hui), all our heartists online and in the room recited the Te Reo Kaikohau. This is a room full of people from 15 nationalities, doing mahi at every level of our hāpori. Nga mihi, Sofitel Wellington

My 10RA English class spent the lesson sharing their knowledge and teaching the rest of us some Te Reo. We did a range of activities: Everyone introduced ourselves in Te Reo (some using the cues on the whiteboard). We viewed a segment of a children's Te Reo language video on youtube which some particularly requested. We did some of the activities suggested by Ako Panuku (brainteasers, tongue twisters, vocabulary, etc. ) We ended with a kahoot on Te Reo. Quite a lot of fun!
