Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori 2021 | Your Moments

From schools, to workplaces to whānau and friends. Thousands of New Zealanders stopped to share in a moment of unity for our people and our language. In joining our Māori Language Moment, you became part of a movement that began a generation ago.

Kia kaha te reo Māori!
Kia kaha Aotearoa!

I have learned to sing the NZ National anthem in Te Reo Māori. (1st verse) 😃🎶

I was playing the Maori sticks at midday today for Maori activity from Hannah young

Lip syncing to the national anthem. This morning I spent time singing it in te Reo Maori and learning the accompanying sign language.

This is one of my favourite songs since I was a kid, thought I'd try tackle it with the ukulele

These are nga waiata I played and sang along with today. Many of the older ones I have known since my teenage years and many are well remembered. All available on u-tube. E Ipo - Prince Tui Teka; Po ata rau; Poi E-Patea maori club; medley -Ngati Kahunganu; Paikea, Ka Panapana, Arohaina Mai, Tama mai -Ngati Porau; Te Hokinga Mai - Pakipaki school; Wairua Tapu - NZ youth choir

Kia Ora

The name of the waiata is Tena Koe

I practiced how to introduce myself in te reo Māori and listened to Waiata Anthems - Six60, Sons of Zion and a few others in the playlist.

It is very peaceful and love the playlist

Reading fairy tales in te reo Māori

My one of my students suggested a Kahoot. She wrote it for her classmates to whakataetae reo. During the Maori Moment she had difficulty sharing her Kahoot so we used one that I had previously made to practice kupu. We now have several student made Kahoots to try tomorrow.

@LearningWorks whānau shared a Māori Language moment virtually. We viewed the Hinewehi Mohi documentary and had some kōrero. Ka pai LearningWorks.

Our team got together over zoom and practiced our 'kei te pehea' sentences, building on what we have learnt in Reo lessons this year.

I didn't get to finish the video, sorry! I had a little distraction behind me. I was inspired by a video I watched yesterday and learning colours in sign language in te reo Maori was a lot easier than I thought which is why I wanted to share this. I encourage you to give it a go. Karawhiua!

This song is one of my favourites since I was a kid, thought I'd tackle trying it out with the ukulele :D

Kia ora koutou. Ko ēnei ngā tauira nā te Kareti kei Waenganui o Murihiku (Central Southland College). We didn't have enough breeze for our beautiful 'Kia kaha te reo Māori ' flag to fly well for our video which is a disappointment. When we got back into our classroom we also listened to 'Pepeha' by Six60 and spoke about the depth of the message of mana as maunga, whanau as waka and aroha as moana. Great lesson today.

We held a waiata kanikani party at preschool! ! !

Tena koutou katoa!

Kia Ora

While listening to Six60 Pepeha, our whānau wrote our individual pepeha. With our kids, 10 and 13 year old, we discussed why it's important for us to learn te reo Māori and how it helps us better understand and appreciate the world around us. We also recognised the importance of the connection with our land, which helps us see how it's all intertwined. Great to see our kids thinking about it and relating it to them. With English as my third language, I'm seeing that languages are much more than words. They express beliefs, values, sufferings and joy of a culture.

Te Reo Maori is the heritage of Aotearoa New Zealand. We have the obligation to pass it to the next generations.

Miss 8 in the video is explaining that she is making biscuits. Her big sister was baking a chocolate brownie as well and we were listening to our Māori waiata playlist on Spotify. Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori 🙌

The staff here at MFM Te Reo o Te Iwi, had a bit of a jam session via our Facebook page. Log In or Sign Up to View See posts, photos and more on Facebook.

The Cancer Society Wellington is dedicated to improving cancer outcomes for all New Zealanders and part of this goal includes the day-to-day use of te reo in our organisation. We have Māori staff and management but we specifically wanted our non-Māori team members to lead this kaupapa in an attempt to normalise te reo within our organisation without it being on the shoulders of Māori staff only. Each day this week, we have been learning a new kiwaha, and decided to meet together to learn today's one - Ka mau te wehi - for our Māori Language Moment!

I found this website last year and it is fantastic! I have done one each for my tamariki too!

I'm absolutely loving the Waiata Anthems at the moment and Six60's 'Pepeha' is miharo! It's getting a lot of airtime in our whare so I thought I'd have a little sing-a-long. I'm not the greatest (Six60 pun right there) and was a little whakama but I thought, karawhiua - give it a go!
