Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori 2021 | Your Moments

From schools, to workplaces to whānau and friends. Thousands of New Zealanders stopped to share in a moment of unity for our people and our language. In joining our Māori Language Moment, you became part of a movement that began a generation ago.

Kia kaha te reo Māori!

Pakipaki tamariki ma👏

Today, we listened to the Maori Legend, Mana's Great Fish. Afterwards, we talked about the story and how it is significant to New Zealand. It was great to share this story!

Kaua e mate wheke mate ururoa! Don’t die like the octopus, die like the hammerhead shark!

I held an awesome little session at my early learning centre where I introduced ngā tamariki to the Māori Language Moment event and talked about my own learning journey with te reo and how I really want to improve. We did some counting, greetings and then sang our favourite waiata. 'Kina, Kina! ' followed by 'Pakeke mai o mati mati' and 'Nau mai, haere mai'. Ngā tamariki really enjoyed our session and did such an awesome job with their kapa haka! This was followed by joining together to say our karakia for kai. I'm really looking forward to building onto this special 'moment' and supporting ngā tamariki, kaiako and centre on our respectful bicultural journey.

Ki tōku kāinga i waiatatia "Tūtira mai ngā iwi" e tokowhā ngā tāngata. Ko māua ko tōku tāne, ko tā maua tamāhine, ko tāna tama hoki. Tokotoru ngā whakapapa! Ka pakipaki te pēpi!

Our team came together (virtually) to celebrate the Māori Language Moment. Here's a shot of our team connecting digitally to celebrate all things te reo. We sung waiata, introduced ourselves in Māori, heard a few people share a mihi or pepeha, and even opened and closed the kōrero with karakia. Everyone had an amazing time embracing the language!

Today during the Māori Language Moment, the Techspace team recited a kaikōhau. We learned that when you say it, you are welcoming all things that are good and wishing for them to be plentiful in times to come. While the kaikōhau is often said during Matariki celebrations, it can be used in many other situations – including at work!

I enjoyed Kapa Haka

Every day I write a little something to go with a meme from Bible. com - which now includes Māori as a language hallelujah! This week I am using te reo Māori as well as English! I have people all around the world who read my ‘blog’! “Kahore he mataku i roto i te aroha: engari ka maka te mataku ki waho e te aroha ina tino rite; no te mea he mamae to te mataku. Ko te tangata hoki e mataku ana, kahore ia i tino rite i roto i te aroha. ” 1 Hoani 4:18 MRI1952 Kahore = not/no Mataku is afraid, wehi is fear, Aroha is love Love means safety, acceptance, value - everyday! (SAVe) - no fears there! When you offer “SAVe” to the people around you as much as you care for yourself - that is what mature love looks like! I am in my second term of lessons! A lot more needed…

I shared my mihi with my Scholarship Geography class to see if they could guess where I was born. One knew that Otepoti was Dunedin! They giggled a bit at my pronunciation BUT practice makes perfect! !
